Golf Tips

ESCAPING FROM HEAVY ROUGH

Look for the shortest route back to the short grass, even if this means playing backwards or sideways.

Right handed player

ESCAPING FROM HEAVY ROUGH

1. Choose your Sand Iron

2. Open the clubface a touch ie aim it five yards right of where you intend to hit the ball. This is because the rough will snag the neck of the club and twist the clubface to the left.

3. Hold 1 inch down the grip and firm up your pressure in your hands. On a scale 7 or 8 out of

4. Position the ball well back in your stance, maybe opposite your back shoe. You don't want the club hitting too much grass before getting to the ball.

5. Apply more weight to your front foot 70%. This creates a steep angle of attack into the ball again helping to avoid hitting grass before the ball.

6. Open your stance, feet pointing 10 yards left of your target.

7. The moment your swing begins hinge your wrists. You need a very steep back lift. Keep your weight favouring the front foot on the backswing.

8. Swing back to shoulder high with your hands.

9. Accelerate the downswing into the back of the ball.

10. Try to make sure your hands lead the clubhead down to impact.

11. Hit very hard doing your best to make a follow through, although this may be impossible if the grass is that thick.

With luck the ball will pop out to the fairway.

P.S. Try and stay on the neat and pretty next time!
